Why Indoor Play Is a Different Engineering Problem
Indoor playgrounds fail for reasons that never trouble an outdoor site: low ceilings, blocked fire routes, poor ventilation and surfacing chosen for looks rather than impact performance. This guide explains how good indoor playground design is planned, specified and verified, so your space is safe, durable and genuinely popular.
Outdoors, you design against weather, ultraviolet exposure and drainage. Indoors those pressures are replaced by harder constraints: a fixed structural envelope, a ceiling height you cannot raise, sprinklers and ductwork you must not obstruct, and an air quality and acoustic environment that is entirely your responsibility. Play value has to be created inside a box somebody else already built.
That is why indoor projects reward early survey work. A measured site assessment before concept design tells you what is actually possible; a concept drawn before the survey usually has to be redrawn.
Start With the Envelope, Not the Equipment
Before selecting a single component, record the physical facts of the room. The following measurements drive every later decision in indoor playground design.
- Clear height at multiple points, measured to the lowest obstruction (sprinkler heads, lighting, beams, ducts), not to the slab soffit.
- Structural grid: column positions and sizes, because columns inside a play footprint must either be padded and designed in, or the layout must move around them.
- Floor loading capacity in kilonewtons per square metre, which matters for ball pools, multi level frames and any anchored structure.
- Floor flatness and level, since modular surfacing telegraphs every dip in a bad screed.
- Fire strategy: escape route widths, travel distances, exit door positions and swing direction, sprinkler and detector coverage.
- Services: power supply positions and capacity, mechanical ventilation supply and extract rates, lighting levels and control zones.
- Access route for delivery and installation, including door widths, lift dimensions and turning space. Large frame components that cannot reach the room are a common, expensive surprise.
Clear height is the single biggest determinant of what you can offer. Low headroom rooms suit toddler zones, soft play, sensory areas, interactive floor projection and low level role play. Multi level net structures, tall slides and climbing towers need generous height, plus the free space above and around them that the equipment standards require. If the room cannot give that height, redesign the offer rather than squeezing an outdoor product into an indoor shell.
Zoning: The Layout Decision That Determines Everything Else
Zoning is the point at which indoor playground design either works or does not. The strongest indoor playgrounds are zoned by age and by activity intensity, with sightlines that let one adult supervise a child from a seated position. Poor zoning creates the two complaints operators hear most often: older children colliding with toddlers, and parents who cannot see their child.
Age separation
Separate under threes from older children with a physical boundary, not a sign. Toddler equipment sized for older children is the source of many minor injuries, and older children in a toddler zone are the source of the rest. Give each zone its own entry so families with mixed age children can still stay together within sightline.
Circulation and queueing
Every slide exit, net tunnel outlet and climbing descent needs a run off area clear of circulation. Draw the paths children will actually take between attractions and keep them wider than feels necessary. Then check that no play element discharges into a fire escape route.

Supervision and the adult experience
Parents stay longer, and return more often, when seating has a clear view of the whole floor, reliable power sockets, decent light and a comfortable noise level. Cafe seating placed with its back to the play area is a design error that costs revenue.
Inclusion from the first sketch
Indoor sites are an easier place to achieve genuine inclusion than sloping outdoor ground, because the floor is already level and dry. Safety Standards That Apply Indoors
Indoor does not mean unregulated. The same equipment safety logic applies, and specifying against recognised standards is the clearest way to compare competing tenders on a like for like basis.
- EN 1176, the European series for playground equipment and surfacing, covers the fundamentals that matter just as much indoors: entrapment of head, neck, fingers and clothing, protection against falls, structural integrity and free space around moving parts. Parts of the series address specific equipment types such as slides, swings, cableways and multi purpose networks.
- EN 1177 sets out how impact attenuating surfacing is tested to determine critical fall height. Any surfacing under an elevated indoor play element should have a documented critical fall height at least equal to the free fall height above it.
- ASTM F1487 and ASTM F1292 are the equivalent United States references for public use equipment and for surface impact attenuation, and are often specified on internationally managed projects.
- The CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook remains a useful plain language reference for layout, supervision and hazard identification.
- In Vietnam, the TCVN 12730 series covers children’s playground equipment and is increasingly cited in public and institutional tenders.
Soft play products designed for indoor use are often certified to indoor specific schemes rather than to EN 1176 in full. That is legitimate, but ask the supplier to state precisely which standard each item is tested to, and to supply the test report rather than a logo on a brochure. Surfacing, Air and Acoustics
Three environmental systems decide whether an indoor playground feels good to be in, and all three belong in the indoor playground design from the outset rather than in a later fit out package.
Surfacing
Under and around elevated equipment you need documented impact attenuation, not simply a soft feel underfoot. Poured rubber and EPDM systems, rubber tiles, and specialist soft play matting all have a role, and thickness must follow the fall height rather than the budget. Depths in the region of 20 to 60 mm are typical depending on the fall height being protected, but the manufacturer’s tested build up is what governs. Indoors you can also weigh factors that barely register outdoors: slip resistance when wet near a cafe, cleanability, seam detailing and low emission materials. Ventilation and thermal comfort
Children at play generate heat and moisture quickly, and an under ventilated play hall becomes unpleasant within an hour of opening. Size mechanical ventilation for design occupancy at peak, not for floor area, and place supply so it does not blow onto seated adults. In Vietnam’s climate, dehumidification matters as much as cooling, particularly for foam filled soft play that holds moisture and odour.
Acoustics
Hard walls, hard floors and excited children produce reverberation that exhausts staff and shortens visits. Absorbent ceiling treatment, soft wall panels in the loudest zones and separating the noisiest attraction from the cafe are cheap when designed in.
Operations, Maintenance and Whole Life Cost
Indoor equipment is used more intensively per square metre than outdoor equipment, and in all weather. Plan the maintenance regime alongside the design.
- Daily visual checks before opening: netting, padding, fixings, surfacing joints, exits clear.
- Weekly cleaning of ball pools and high contact surfaces, with a documented method.
- Monthly operational inspection of moving parts, wear points and anchor fixings.
- Annual main inspection covering structural condition, foundations and cumulative wear, recorded in writing.
- A spare parts strategy agreed at purchase, so a torn net or damaged panel does not close a zone for weeks.

A Practical Indoor Playground Design Checklist
- Measure clear heights, column grid, floor loading and access route before drawing anything.
- Confirm the fire strategy with the building operator and keep escape routes free of play elements.

Frequently Asked Questions
What ceiling height do I need for an indoor playground?
It depends entirely on the attractions. Toddler soft play, role play and sensory zones work in modest headroom. Multi level frames, tall slides and climbing structures need generous clear height plus the free space the equipment standard requires above and around them. Always measure to the lowest obstruction, such as sprinkler heads, rather than to the slab.
Does EN 1176 apply to indoor soft play?
Many indoor soft play products are tested to indoor specific schemes rather than the full EN 1176 series, while structural play elements such as slides and nets are commonly certified to EN 1176. Ask the supplier to name the exact standard for each item and to provide the test report, then keep those documents in your project file.
How much space should I allow per child?
Rather than a single rule, calculate from capacity: total your equipment’s stated user numbers, add circulation and run off areas, add the adult seating zone, then check the result against the building’s occupancy and escape capacity. Crowding is usually a symptom of too little circulation space, not too little equipment.
What is the most common mistake in indoor playground projects?
