How to Choose Outdoor Playground Equipment for Schools

What Makes a School Playground Different

Choosing outdoor playground equipment for schools is not the same as buying for a park or a residential courtyard. A school playground carries hundreds of children in the same fifteen minute break, every school day, under staff supervision, within a fixed annual budget. This guide covers how to specify for that reality.

Three constraints shape every decision. First, peak density: the whole cohort arrives at once, so throughput matters more than novelty. Second, narrow age bands: a kindergarten and a lower secondary school need genuinely different equipment, not the same catalogue item in a different colour. Third, supervision sightlines: teachers on duty must be able to see the whole area from a small number of standing positions. Equipment that scores well on all three will outperform a more spectacular structure that fails one of them.

Start With Age Zoning, Not With Products

Before you look at any equipment, divide the available area by age. Mixing very young children with older, faster ones causes most minor playground injuries in schools, and it also makes the space feel unusable to both groups.

Nursery and kindergarten, roughly 2 to 5 years

Low platforms, short and wide slides, ramps and steps rather than ladders, enclosed sides, simple role-play elements such as playhouses and shop fronts, spring rockers, and low balance features. Falling heights should be kept low deliberately, because low falling heights reduce the required surfacing performance and the required footprint at the same time. Toddlers play beside each other more than with each other, so several small features beat one large structure.

Primary, roughly 6 to 11 years

This is the band with the widest appetite. Multi-level play towers with slides and climbing access, net and rope climbing, monkey bars and overhead traversing, balance trails, and group swings. Children in this band want to test themselves, so graded challenge is essential: several routes up a structure with different difficulty, so a cautious child and a confident child use the same equipment.

Lower secondary and above

Older pupils abandon equipment that reads as childish. What works is upper body and agility apparatus, parkour-style structures, climbing walls and boulders, ball courts, and social seating. This is also where outdoor fitness apparatus starts to make sense, though adult fitness equipment is governed by EN 16630 rather than the playground standards, so it needs to be specified separately.

Get the Safety Requirements Fixed Early

School projects are reviewed by parents, boards and inspectors, so evidence matters. Equipment should be tested against EN 1176 for playground equipment, or ASTM F1487 where an American framework is preferred, with the Vietnamese series TCVN 12730 referenced for local work. Surfacing needs a declared critical fall height determined to EN 1177 or ASTM F1292 that equals or exceeds the falling height of the equipment above it.

Two numbers drive the layout: falling height and impact area. Every item needs clear free space around it, and the impact area beneath and around it must be impact attenuating. On tight school sites this is where plans fail, because a layout drawn to fit the boundary at concept stage does not survive the clearance check. Sizing: How Much Equipment for How Many Pupils

There is no universal formula, but there is a workable method. Count the largest number of children who will be outside at one time, then count the play positions your proposed layout offers. A play position is one child actively using one element: one swing seat, one slide, one climbing route, one rocker seat, one balance beam.

If your play positions cover only a small fraction of the children present, the equipment becomes a queue and the rest of the cohort ends up running in the open space. That is not necessarily wrong, since open running space has real value, but it should be a decision rather than an accident. Practical approach:

  • Allocate a share of the yard to open, unequipped hard or soft surface for running and ball games.
  • Allocate the remainder to equipped zones split by age band.
  • Prefer wide, multi-entry structures over tall single-entry ones, because they carry more children per square metre.
  • Add high-throughput items such as multi-lane slides, group swings and long balance trails.
  • Include quiet and social elements so children who do not want to climb still have somewhere to be.

Materials and Durability in a Tropical Climate

School equipment is used more intensively than almost any other category, and Vietnam’s heat, humidity, UV load and monsoon rain accelerate every failure mode. Material choice is a maintenance budget decision.

Two details are worth writing into a school specification explicitly: shade over metal slides and overhead bars, and fasteners that cannot be removed by a curious child with a coin. Both prevent problems that are expensive to fix later.

Budget Staging Without Wasting Money

Few schools can fund the ideal scheme in one year. Staging works if the masterplan is designed once and built in phases, and fails if each year is bought independently.

  1. Commission one layout for the whole yard covering age zones, circulation, drainage, shade and services, even if only part of it is built now.
  2. Build the groundworks and surfacing generously in phase one where they sit under future equipment, because retrofitting surfacing around installed equipment costs far more.
  3. Phase by age zone, not by equipment type, so each phase delivers a complete usable area.
  4. Keep the equipment family consistent so later additions match in fixing detail, colour and post section.
  5. Reserve part of each phase budget for maintenance and for the inspection regime the standards expect.

  • Site survey with levels, drainage, existing trees, underground services and boundary conditions.
  • Pupil numbers by age band and peak outdoor occupancy.
  • Supervision plan and required sightlines from staff duty positions.
  • Age zone plan with an equipment schedule and play position count per zone.
  • Named standards for equipment and for surfacing, with third party test evidence required at submittal.
  • Schedule of falling heights against surfacing critical fall heights.
  • Dimensioned layout showing free space and impact areas.
  • Shade strategy and material temperature considerations.

Should a school buy one large structure or several small items?

Several well chosen items usually serve a school better. They spread children out, reduce queuing, allow age separation, and let you phase the budget. One large structure is more visually impressive and can be the right centrepiece, but as the only provision it concentrates use and creates congestion at entries and exits.

What surfacing is best for a school playground?

It depends on falling height and on use intensity. Poured rubber and EPDM systems give a seamless surface with a declared critical fall height and suit high traffic areas. Rubber tiles are easier to repair in patches. Loose fill is cheaper to install but needs constant topping up and raking, which is a real burden in a school.

When is the best time to install school playground equipment?

School holidays, planned backwards from the handover date you need. Groundworks, foundations, surfacing curing and post-installation inspection all take time, and surfacing in particular is weather dependent. Agree the programme early so equipment lead times and the installation window line up rather than compete.
